Dr. Shelly Vaden is a distinguished professor of internal medicine at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she has served on the faculty since 1991. A 1985 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, she completed her internship at Cornell University and her residency and PhD at North Carolina State University. She is a recognized global authority in veterinary nephrology and urology, with a career dedicated to advancing the diagnosis and management of kidney and urinary tract diseases in companion animals. Her research, which has secured over $6.5 million in funding, bridges the gap between laboratory discovery and clinical practice, influencing consensus statements on conditions such as glomerular disease and urinary incontinence. Dr. Vaden is a founding member and president of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ACVNU) and a past president-elect of the International Renal Interest Society. Throughout her career, she has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and has been instrumental in formalizing training programs for the next generation of veterinary specialists. In 2026, she was honored with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Clinical Research Award for her significant contributions to the field.
