About
Dr. Raul A. Almeida is a distinguished veterinary scientist specializing in bovine mastitis and milk microbiology. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Littoral in Argentina in 1975. Following his graduation, he served as the head of the microbiology diagnostic laboratory at the National Institute of Agriculture Technology (INTA-Argentina) in Rafaela, where he gained foundational experience in animal health diagnostics. In 1985, he relocated to the United States to pursue advanced studies at Iowa State University, where he completed both his MSc and PhD in Veterinary Microbiology by 1991. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Almeida joined the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) to work with Dr. Steve Oliver’s renowned mastitis research group. His career has been dedicated to understanding the pathogenesis of bovine mastitis, with a specific focus on identifying virulence factors and developing vaccines to control environmental pathogens such as Streptococcus uberis. In 2010, he was appointed director of the University of Tennessee Mastitis Quality Milk Laboratory, where he has led efforts in milk microbiology and the implementation of mastitis control programs to improve dairy industry profitability. Throughout his career, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and technical proceedings, and has served as an invited speaker at international congresses across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
