Elena Martínez de Merlo is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a tenured professor in the Department of Animal Medicine and Surgery at the Complutense University of Madrid. She earned her veterinary degree from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 1987 and completed her doctorate at the same institution in 1993. Since 1998, she has served as a tenured professor, contributing significantly to the field of veterinary oncology and diagnostic cytology. She is a recognized expert in the clinical application of cytology and has authored several authoritative atlases and manuals on the subject, including the 'Atlas of Diagnostic Cytology in Small Animals'. In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Martínez de Merlo performs clinical work at the Complutense Veterinary Teaching Hospital (HCVC), where she leads the Oncology and Diagnostic Cytology Clinic within the Clinical Pathobiology Service. She has served as the director of the UCM's continuing education diploma in small animal cytological interpretation and was the founding president of the GEVONC (Group of Veterinary Specialists in Oncology) of AVEPA from 2011 to 2014.
